As paddlers we see sharks mostly in spring when the whales are about. They occasionally cruise past but we have not had any really close encounters apart from an occasional bump which could be anything.

Overcast days do make me more nervous and we had a what we thought might be a curious shark quite recently. I'm with Mark, give them the respect due as amazing creatures.

Having said that we did have a chap who had his surf ski bitten in half by what was thought to be a junior shark last year. His mates rescued him, I guess he might have a different view.

Barry Perth WAUnknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18129966252814393324noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7966256462371281922.post-26942627219331042142014-01-28T17:06:41.837+11:002014-01-28T17:06:41.837+11:00Yep, I can't help that think that a 5m+ waterl...Yep, I can't help that think that a 5m+ waterline moving through the water from be,ow looks way more dangerous even to a big shark than we can ever imagine. I like the analogy that we should re-title them 'Shark Accidents' instead of 'Shark Attacks'. After all, we don't call them 'Car Attacks', and if a shark attacks a person it's almost definitely made a mistake.Mark Sundinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05603692749315592080noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7966256462371281922.post-76641407604687125552014-01-28T17:03:19.016+11:002014-01-28T17:03:19.016+11:00Here in South Africa we've had a few hits on s...Here in South Africa we've had a few hits on surfskis over the years (none, happily for a few years now). No-one hurt except for an unprovoked attack by a surfski paddler on a shark who'd been hooked by an angler.

http://www.surfski.info/latest-news/item/76-sharks-and-skis.htmlRobMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05310955925637550743noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7966256462371281922.post-48974087913211600172013-12-01T02:56:15.641+11:002013-12-01T02:56:15.641+11:00Nice article Mark, sharks need all the friends the...Nice article Mark, sharks need all the friends they can get, between netting and shark-fin soup. By the way, some shark "attacks" which get into statistics turn out to have occurred on board a boat - after the shark had been caught! Others most certainly would not have happened if the "victim" had left the shark alone, ie not grabbed it by the tail.

The only time I've seen a shark while paddling was while using a very narrow surf-ski for the first time. It acted as a learning aid to getting back on the thing fast after falling off.

Dan.Danhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05268555072661561558noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7966256462371281922.post-16792747560951647362012-01-25T13:48:34.251+11:002012-01-25T13:48:34.251+11:00Rob,

Story go's that the lady was knocked off her boat, then bitten on the hand while in the water after... So not unheard of but a very unlikely occurance.

I see sharks often. They've never been a problem, but still provides a lot of pucker factor to the morning.

Tom

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/national/woman-fends-off-white-pointer-shark-at-byron-bay/story-e6frf7l6-1111114646401Tomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10845278403240698263noreply@blogger.com
